What to do in Tandil: Your weekend escape

October 16, 2024

Last weekend, my partner and I decided to take a much-needed escape from the bustle of Buenos Aires. We’d heard great things about Tandil — a small city just a few hours’ drive away, surrounded by hills and famous for its cheeses (need I say more?) — and figured it was the perfect spot for a quick getaway. So, we packed our bags, filled the car with snacks and mate, and hit the road.

As we drove closer, the landscape shifted from the flat expanse of the pampas to the rolling green hills that Tandil is famous for. I was immediately struck by the contrast — the fresh air, the open space, the massive boulders scattered across the hills. It was such a refreshing change from the commotion of Buenos Aires city. Tandil, with its laid-back vibe, felt like a hidden gem that more people needed to discover.

What really sold me on Tandil was the combination of natural beauty and a thriving food scene. Whether you’re into hiking or indulging in artisanal cheeses (spoiler: we did a lot of both), Tandil has something to offer. The city’s charm lies in its simplicity — nothing feels rushed, the people are friendly, and the food… well, I’ll get to that in a bit.

If you’re looking for a weekend escape that gives you a little bit of everything — hiking, eating, relaxing — enjoy my top recommendations for what to do in Tandil, Buenos Aires.

But first… Buenos Aires has hills?

Yes! Buenos Aires province is massive (bigger than my home state of Colorado) and the geography changes the farther you get from the city. Tandil is surrounded by rolling hills and large boulders, an ideal landscape for hikers, bikers, and runners.

It’s also steeped in history, from its founding in 1823 to the indigenous roots of its name, which means “falling rock” in the Mapuche language. One of its most famous attractions, the now-fallen Piedra Movediza (Moving Rock), once balanced precariously on a hill for centuries and drew thousands of visitors.

What to do in Tandil

From scenic hikes that give you a bird’s-eye view of the landscape to cultural landmarks and peaceful spots to relax with a mate, Tandil has something for everyone.

Here are some of the best things to do while you’re here.

  • Ride the lift at Cerro El Centinela: Our first stop was Cerro El Centinela, where we decided to take the chairlift up the mountain. I’m usually all about hiking, but sometimes you just want to sit back and enjoy the view — and wow, what a view. The Tandil landscape is dotted with farms, pine trees, boulders, and tons of cute animals. It was peaceful, serene, and the perfect way to kick off our weekend. If you have time, you can grab a beer or snack at the base of the lift. Keep in mind that this attraction gets very crowded, so avoid visiting on the weekend if you can.

  • Hike Sendero de las Ánimas: Later that day, we felt more adventurous and hit the Sendero de las Ánimas trail. The path winds through forests and rocky terrain with a lot of sun exposure. (Don’t forget your sunscreen). It’s a relatively easy walk and the views at the top are beautiful. You’ll also pass some boujie Tandil real estate on your way up. “Selling Tandil,” anyone?

  • Hike Cerro Venado: For those who want a slightly more challenging walk, Cerro Venado is your spot. The panoramic views from the top are unbeatable, giving you a real sense of the city and surrounding hills. You can also combine this walk with a visit to Cristo de Las Sierras, an iconic statue of Christ that overlooks the city from a hilltop.

  • Hike Paseo de los Pioneros: On our second day, we opted for something more high-intensity and decided to run along the trail in Paseo de los Pioneros. It’s a beautiful, easygoing path that takes you through some stunning countryside.

  • Drink mate at the Dique: Tandil’s Dique, a reservoir in the middle of the city, is the perfect place to relax with some mates and snacks after a morning hike or run.

Where to eat in Tandil

Tandil offers more than just nature — it’s also a foodie haven. Famous for its regional products like cheese, cured meats, and artisan sweets, Tandil will make sure you don’t leave with an empty stomach.

And in between all the munching on charcuterie, you can enjoy some fantastic meals.

These were our favorite spots:

  • La Protegida: La Protegida is a high-end inn in Tandil that also has a delicious restaurant. If you’re looking to enjoy an upscale meal, this is your spot. The highlight? Their use of fresh ingredients straight from their own organic garden.

  • Barrika: Barrika is a relatively new restaurant in Tandil that attracts a younger crowd. They specialize in meat sous vide, the French process of vacuum-sealing food and cooking it in a temperature-controlled water bath. It’s then thrown on the grill for extra flavor. The provoleta was 10/10, chef’s kiss.

  • Tierra de Azafranes: One of the most famous restaurants in Tandil, Tierra de Azafranes specializes in rice, fish, and seafood. It fills up with tourists and locals alike, so make sure you grab a reservation. And don’t miss the risotto — it was our personal favorite.

  • Época de Quesos: You can’t leave Tandil without indulging in its famous cheese, and Época de Quesos is the place to do it. This historic deli-turned-restaurant offers a wide array of locally made cheeses, cold cuts, and wines. You can also buy cheese to go and assemble your own charcuterie board back home.

  • Tea time at Amaike: After a day of hiking, there’s nothing better than watching the sunset at Amaike while sipping on a coffee or tea. Tucked into a hillside, you’ll enjoy stunning views of green fields and beautiful homes in the private golf club across the street. Amaike’s café offers a variety of teas, coffees, and homemade pastries.
